Baja Ready Rally Fighter

    Project Description

Some of us here at Local Motors have decided to volunteer our time in order to make our own race car and race team! Shown are just some of the projects that are ongoing on the car. This race car is being used as a test bed to subject current RF parts to the ruffest conditions on earth, as well as test out some parts that could someday make it onto our production Rally Fighters.
As always, any input is greatly appreciated, and if you you have an idea, be it what parts we should run, or what the vinyl wrap should look like, we would love to hear it!

Flitch, Thanks for the bump. There are exciting things happening with the race car, and as soon as I have a few free minutes (of not working on the racecar) I will be creating a new revision of the project

Good luck, guys as you prepare for the SCORE 250!  Since you've already done a spectacular front flip, are you going to try a backflip this time?!  Seriously, have fun and I'll be tracking your progress during the race. :)

So how did you do?  How did it go?

    February 6, 2013, 8:52 pm

Thanks, Matt, for sharing that clip!  That is sooo cool!  Please, more videos!

    February 6, 2013, 5:30 pm

Yep, that was Buddy "Honey Badger" Crisp driving. Here's a better video:

    February 5, 2013, 5:59 pm

I'm pretty sure that was Buddy Crisp driving.  Tony (I think) drove it around on the second lap.

    February 5, 2013, 5:57 pm

Wow, that was crazy!! Well at least now you know it can roll on a couple of different axis's and keep moving forward!! Who was driving when that happened???

    February 5, 2013, 2:40 pm

Tony, here is the clip of the RF going end-over-end and still racing!  Love this car!

    February 5, 2013, 11:37 am

Hey Richard, throw a link for that video up if you could. Be interested to see it!!!

    February 5, 2013, 11:11 am

Just watched the "flip" video posted on Facebook!  That is crazy how you were able to keep going.  That was on the first lap?  Sounds like you came in second in the Sportsman class.  Congrats!  What was your time?  Cannot wait for more video.

    January 25, 2013, 11:15 pm

Unfortunately we did not get to pre-run the course this year, but Buddy (Who will be driving the first lap) has run this race many times before, and is very familiar with the course. I will be driving the second lap with feedback coming from Buddy as to where the dangerous areas are. My main goal will be to cross the finish line, as this will be my first time behind the wheel in a real desert race.

    January 25, 2013, 6:21 pm

Who will be doing the driving?

    January 25, 2013, 6:16 pm

Did anyone get to pre-run the track or at least go look at it?

    January 25, 2013, 5:59 pm

Thanks for the answers, Tony.  Everything was very clearly answered!  I see that it looks like you are getting the body panels back on.  One week left!

Richard, The Front Nose Cone, Belly Scoops, Rear Fenders, and Rear Bumper are all carbon on all the GEN 1 RF's. Because the Race Car started its life as a GEN1 (it was actually one of the first 5 RF's ever built), it retains those carbon pieces.

Here is a picture of our fuel system. The fuel leaves the cell, travels through a 5 Micron filter, goes in to a Tee, then we have 2 fuel pumps in parallel (only one running at a time). That travels back in to another Tee, that feeds into a 100 Micron Filter. Fuel then passes through the regulator, and from there either returns to the fuel cell, or goes up to the fuel rail. The stock LS is a non-return system, but because we use an external regulator it needs to be a return system.

The Secondary latches are required by the rules for any door that still swings open.

    January 25, 2013, 8:13 am

    Couple questions.
    What body parts are carbon?
Is the redundancy in the fuel system to be electrical, mechanical or both?
Are the second latches for the doors due to a past problem of them not staying shut in a race?

    January 25, 2013, 8:11 am

A lot of work!  It has been exciting watching you all buzzing around that car.  You have definitely learned a lot from the past several races and are actively applying that knowledge to this build.  The result should be great.  Go Team!  Go Win!  Go Local!

    January 19, 2013, 10:50 am

Hey Tony is this the same car that you guys ran in the baja recently?? What are you guys wanting to improve?? Looks like you've done some nice work so far. Now is this what a standard RF looks like as far as the mod's your highlighting?? I don't remember exactly from the one's I saw at SEMA, What is the name of the suspension setup your using on the rear with the trailing arms?? I know there a name for it. This looks like a really fun project!!  I noticed all of the LM's cut into the various parts, very cool!!

    January 12, 2013, 5:30 pm

Do you have any video from the November Baja run?  Would love to see some--even if it is just raw footage!

    January 14, 2013, 10:40 am

Great Finds! I haven't seen any of those videos

    January 12, 2013, 9:17 pm

I forgot to mention that the Rally Fighter drives by at 9:57 in that last video.

    January 12, 2013, 9:17 pm

What can I say?  I love finding clips with my favorite race car!  Here's another one:

    January 12, 2013, 9:10 pm

Here is another one from Youtube.  The Rally Fighter cruises by at 5:38.

    January 12, 2013, 9:00 pm

I did find this today on Youtube.  The Rally Fighter comes around the corner at 19:25 blowing the horn!

    January 12, 2013, 5:28 pm

Now those are the kind of mods I like to see!  That trailing arm is the beast!  Would love to be there to help out!

    January 12, 2013, 8:22 pm

I remember Buddy Crisp at SEMA showing me the structure and suspension of a trophy truck.  His wise comment was, "The Rally Fighter has the geometry, it just lacks the structure."  Of course he didn't mean that the Rally Fighter wasn't up to the task, but that compared to a trophy truck it has the same geometry.  It just needed to be beefed up to take on some serious beating.  It looks like you are doing some serious structure strengthening!  Just this past week I've been thinking about what it would take to beef up the Rally Fighter into one mean Fighter and here you had already started working on it! :)  Now I REALLY want one! Ha!

    January 12, 2013, 8:09 pm

Thanks Richard, I would love it if you were out here to help out too! I will see if I can get some footage together.

    January 11, 2013, 11:15 pm

Our SHORT To-Do list... Testing is in 7 days, race is in 3 weeks...

    January 18, 2013, 8:47 pm

I'm so excited about you guys beefing this up and racing it!  I've been watching the project on the cam.  Looks like great work.  Can't wait to see it beating down the trail! :)

    January 18, 2013, 5:30 pm

Yes, we will be racing in Sportsman. We will be racing in SCORE, HDRA, and some BITD Races

    January 12, 2013, 11:34 pm

What class will you be racing in--Sportsman?
